Andrew Heyn discusses Hong Kong situation and implications for UK

    Published On: 28 January 2021

With developments in Hong Kong continuing to strain UK-China relations, Andrew Heyn, the outgoing British Consul General to Hong Kong and Macau, briefed Asia House Corporate Members on the current situation in the Special Administrative Region (SAR).

Heyn, who recently completed his posting to Hong Kong, outlined the challenges facing the UK in the region, and how he envisages relations playing out.

Asia House Corporate Members joined the digital discussion from around the world, with Heyn taking a range of questions on issues such as the independence of the Hong Kong judiciary; the National Security Law; and the UK’s policy response to developments in the SAR. The wider dynamic between the US, Europe and China was also discussed, as were the implications for businesses trading in Hong Kong.

The off-the-record briefing, chaired by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence, was convened for Asia House Corporate Members on 28 January 2021.
