John Murton, UK COP26 Envoy
Ahead of hosting this year’s COP26 summit, the UK has challenged countries and businesses to raise their climate ambitions through its ‘Race to Zero’ campaign. Yet with many of the world’s biggest emitters under pressure to boost economic growth, getting buy-in to the COP26 agenda will require careful diplomatic engagement.
Tasked with coordinating the UK’s international diplomacy in support of COP26 is Dr John Murton, the UK’s COP26 Envoy, who will brief Asia House Corporate Members on Thursday 15 April.
Murton will provide an update on the UK’s engagement with markets in Asia and beyond ahead of the Glasgow summit, and will outline the efforts to support governments and businesses achieve their climate targets. He will also discuss ways for the private sector to support the emissions reduction agenda.
Murton was appointed as the UK’s COP26 Envoy in November 2019, having previously served as UK Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of Congo, and Central African Republic. He has considerable professional experience in Africa and Asia, and has a particular focus on energy transition.
This digital briefing is part of Asia House’s COP 26 Programme, a series of initiatives exploring key policy developments and business responses to climate change in the lead up to COP26 in the UK in November. The Programme has previously featured COP26 President Alok Sharma, and Ken O’Flaherty, the UK Government’s COP26 Regional Ambassador to Asia-Pacific and South Asia.
