Vietnam’s Ambassador to the UK discusses trade outlook

    Published On: 1 September 2021

Vietnam’s economic growth ambitions were central to an Asia House briefing with the country’s Ambassador to the UK, His Excellency Nguyen Hoang Long, today (1 September).

Speaking at Asia House during a hybrid event – with some Corporate Members in the room and others joining online – the Ambassador provided an update on the COVID-19 situation in Vietnam before outlining the country’s plans to drive the economic recovery from the crisis.

In a comprehensive briefing, the Ambassador covered a range of issues, including the sectors Vietnam is focusing on to drive investment; the country’s role in global supply chains; and its sustainability endeavours. Vietnam’s trade performance and outlook were also discussed, with the Ambassador citing a recent Asia House research briefing.

Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence, chairing the discussion, marshalled questions from around the table and online, with some Corporate Members dialling in from markets around the world to join the conversation.

Issues raised with the Ambassador included efforts to improve investor confidence in Vietnam; the progress of the UK-Vietnam Economic and Trade Commission; and the role of the private sector in enhancing Vietnam’s resilience to climate change. The UK’s potential accession to the CPTPP was also discussed in the off-the-record briefing, convened exclusively for Asia House Corporate Members.
