Tom Tugendhat shares takes on Integrated Review and implications for UK-China relations

In the week that the UK government revealed its highly anticipated Integrated Review, Asia House welcomed Tom Tugendhat, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, to brief Corporate Members on the UK’s strategy for Asia and his views on relations with China.

Tugendhat, who is also the Head of the China Research Group, shared his take on the Integrated Review, including its implications for UK-China relations, and outlined his thoughts on how the UK and its global partners should approach Beijing.

Asia House Corporate Members, joining the off-the-record briefing from around the world, put a range of questions to Tugendhat, who was asked about the UK’s trade position on China; whether there needs to be greater understanding of China in the UK; and how British based firms can position themselves in terms of the wider Asia region’s ascendance.

Multilateral efforts to engage with China also came up, including the mooted ‘D10’ concept; the role allies can play in offering economic support in response to tariffs; and the QUAD as a framework for cooperation.

Chaired by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence, the briefing was convened exclusively for Asia House Corporate Members.
